Both grating couplers and fiber-chip edge couplers are commonly used in integrated optics for coupling light between planar SOI waveguides and optical fibers. While grating couplers have the advantage of being able to couple light to and from the chip at any location from the chip, the bandwidth can be limited due to the dispersive operating principle of grating couplers. When a large operating bandwidth is desired, edge couplers provide a good alternative.
